Kea have become beach goers this summer as they feast on nectar from harakeke/flax flowers near the sea at Ōkārito on the West Coast and Golden Bay.
“Kea are well known as our alpine parrot, but they actually live from the mountains to the sea,” a Department of Conservation (DOC) said in a Facebook post.
Paula Sheridan has lived in Ōkārito for 18 years and said she had never seen kea so active near the coast or stay for this long before.
