The support of Te Rūnanga o Maakawhio, the people of South Westland, and Department of Conservation, remains central to achieving the predator-free vision.

South Westland locals are deeply connected to their natural environment – as farmers, hunters, adventurers and conservationists. Many community-based conservation efforts operate alongside the well-established Department of Conservation team based in Franz Josef.

South Westland is an important region for primary industries, and home to many nature-tourism operators, hosting a range of tours celebrating the many taonga species that call the region home.
